#BlueStarBrief July 2019

2020 US Presidential Campaign Update

As we approach the U.S. presidential election in November 2020, we look forward to providing important updates and developments from the campaign trail.

The Democratic party's 24 primary candidates participated in two debates on June 26-27, as they compete for their party's nomination for president in 2020. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has announced it will hold a total of 12 debates extending into 2020.

Currently, 21 Democratic candidates have met the DNC's stricter threshold of reaching either 1% in national polling or 65,000 donors to qualify to participate in the second debate on July 30-31. Fourteen candidates have reached both levels, which guarantees their place in the July debate: Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julián Castro, Tulsi Gabbard, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Jay Inslee, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson, and Andrew Yang. Qualifications to participate in the third and fourth debates in September and October will be raised and will require reaching both a polling and a donor level, not just one or the other.

On the Republican side, a few candidates have indicated they may challenge incumbent President Trump in a Republican party primary, with just one such candidate officially entering the race. The Democratic and Republican parties' political conventions will take place in July and August 2020, respectively, during which their presidential nominees will be officially elected.

The winner of the 2020 presidential election is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2021.

The coming months of 2019 will showcase a series of televised primary debates among Democratic party candidates, including:

  • 2nd debate: July 30-31 Detroit, Michigan (CNN)
  • 3rd debate: September 12-13 — Houston, Texas (ABC/Univision)
  • 4th debate: October Date and Location to be announced
