The Manos Premier

Brussels, Belgium

Behind the ivy-clad façade here is a miniature stately home, with glittering chandeliers, Neoclassical columns and Louis XV furniture. It is grand but relaxed, and guests can bask in the welcome of a family-owned hotel, with its luxury rooms, spa and hammam, gourmet restaurant and large garden.

Location

8 / 10

In the southern suburb of Saint-Gilles, a few minutes’ walk from the Art Nouveau pearl, the Horta Museum. The busy Chaussée de Charleroi leads to the Avenue and Place Louise, Brussels’ most upmarket shopping area. On foot, the Grand Place – the historic heart of Brussels – is an agreeable 30-minute walk away. Otherwise there are tram links to Place Louise (numbers 92, 97), which is a public transport hub (metro, tram, bus).

Style and Character

8 / 10

The Manos Premier was the first of a small, high-end hotel group established by the Greek-Belgian Emmanuel (‘Manos’) Poulgouras in the Eighties, and it remains proudly family-owned. The public rooms have a polished elegance, with antiques and oil paintings, yet they also offer the intimate comfort of a well-heeled club.

Service and Facilities

8 / 10

The hotel prides itself on its close attention to its guests’ needs, with a 24-hour reception and a concierge service. The Manos Spa (additional charge €20 [£16] per day) has a beautiful, Alhambra-inspired Turkish hammam, with a turquoise whirlpool plunge bath, and treatment rooms for massage. The fitness suite offers a full range of exercise machines. Outside, the garden is like a miniature park, with mature trees, waterfalls and ponds. The hotel has two lifts, and access to onsite parking (€20 per night; book ahead).

Rooms

8 / 10

The 50 rooms come in four categories, in increasing size: Classic (single occupancy), Superior, Deluxe and Suites. They all have classical elegance, with antique furniture, and gold-framed paintings and prints. A rolling renovation programme has introduced a more pared-down look in stylish greys and white, but still with classical and antique touches. Superior and above rooms come with a television, minibar, safe, hairdryer and bathrobes, and the marble-lined bathrooms have bathtubs with shower attachments; Classic rooms have a television, minibar and shower (no bathtub). There is airconditioning throughout the hotel.

Food and Drink

8 / 10

The hotel’s elegant Kolya Restaurant (closed Saturday lunch and Sunday) offers inventive European cuisine with Asian influences, with dishes such as octopus carpaccio with yuzu pearls and fillet of sea bream with wild dandelion panna cotta. A copious buffet breakfast is also served in the Kolya Restaurant, with a choice of cereals, croissants, freshly-squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, cheese, ham, hot sausages, bacon and eggs. The hotel has its own extensive, club-like bar. In warm weather, tea, drinks and meals can be taken on the terrace in the garden.
